Technical Advice (from an amateur) - Useful Programs - Helpful Tips - Ask a Question - Disclaimer: First of all, I do NOT claim to be an expert of computers or any other form of technology for that matter; however, I do enjoy researching and trying out new things on computers (mainly). This has gotten me into some trouble, trying out new things, that is. Once, at the age of ten, I deleted our whole hard drive by accidently choosing "Erase Disk" on our old Macintosh. More recently, I nearly caused our home PC to become un-repairable; I deleted entry after entry in the "System Registry" to try and make the speed of the computer faster. But as they say, "no pain, no gain." Needless to say, I have learned a lot through my interactions, shall we say, with computers. On a higher note, in the recent past I have helped a computer recover after an infection by a virus (ooh, I hate those) and helped speed up our home PC (yes, the same one I almost irreversibly destroyed). Now, I am here to offer whoever may be browsing my site a little bit of advice in a couple areas of computers. By the way, I don't like Macs.... All this information is for PC only. - Useful Programs - Helpful Tips - Ask a Question - Top - Useful Programs Find and remove unwanted virus programs and infections. AntiVir Personal Edition Classic A free antivirus program that works very good! A sound editing program. Convert music files and video files. Supports such file types as mp3, mpeg, wma, wmv, and flv. Another free antivirus program that works very good as well! A free program that keeps your computer clean from "scraps." Cleans up programs and registry entries to help your computer run faster. A free converting program. Supports such file types as mp3, mp4, mpeg, wma, wmv, mov, and flv. An alternate media player program. Supports such files as WMA and mp3. Also includes CD ripper. A web browser; competitive alternate to Internet Explorer. If you're strapped for cash, you can download this free office suite (much like Microsoft Office) which includes a writing program (like Word), spreadsheet program (like Excel), and other basic office programs. A great video and music player that is small and plays almost anything. - Useful Programs - Helpful Tips - Ask a Question - Top - Helpful Tips When browsing the internet... - Press "Ctrl" and "F" (Ctrl+F) in order to bring up a search box for the page you are viewing.
- Do NOT offer ANY personal information (i.e. social security number, credit card number) to a website unless you know and trust the website or the website url contains "https:..." (as opposed to "http:...").
- If something pops up on your computer saying that you have a virus and need to scan now, DO NOT click it! This is most likely a virus! - To get rid of ads, download Mozilla Firefox and then download the add-on "AdBlock Plus." Once this is added to Firefox, subscribe to "easylist USA" -> this will stop many ads, even on the side of Facebook. To improve overall speed of your computer.... - Click the start menu, click "Run" or type directly into your search box (depending on your Operating System (OS)) "msconfig" -> then click the tab entitled "Startup". Click "Disable All" - none of the programs listed are required for your computer to start. (If you know what you're doing, you can pick and choose the programs you want to start on startup.)
- Scan your computer for viruses regularly. If you do not have an anti-virus program, look in the Useful Programs section of this page to download a free one. - Uninstall unused programs that are just taking up space.
